May 30th. The Levels from the bottom field. Just a lovely evening with the sun on the Levels and West Ling church standing proud on the high res photo. In the background Glastonbury Tor is just masked but the ruins of Burrow Mump are just visable above the cattle.
May 29th. Ella Bennett. the youngest child of our next door neighbours David & Sandrine. As a bilingual four year old with a French mother she is bright as a spark and now knows our 5 pigs, which we share with them on Christian name terms.
May 28th Richard and Lucy. Lucy is my niece and soon to be married to Richard a pilot for British Airways. The date is set in late November and its all very exciting. They popped down to Somerset for the weekend - great to see them.
May 27th. Richard Holmes. On the morning of his mothers funeral at Guildford Crem. Perhaps my oldest friend from years gone by, my best man and I was his. Sad day, but good to catch up
May 26th. The Fall of the House of....Phillips House. First it was there in the morning and four hours later it was gone. A home for the elderly Phillips House was built in the late 60's has now bitten the dust, to be replaced by a new version, now to be owed by a housing association.
May 25th. An office Lunch. It was such a great day and as we are all about to disappear over the next few months on summer holidays I thought it would be a good idea to get together at Applegarth. Good fun to see everyone
May 24th. Gillian the podiatrist. Based in Langport, Gillian operates in the old Bank Building and does one of those jobs that really make a difference. My feet take a real turn for the better after our appointments – great value.
May 23rd. Dolly our "mule" sheep. The clippers visited yesterday and our round plump sheep (see April 2nd) suddenly now looks rather ragged. Her two lambs in the back ground are still feeding and as such her "condition" has wained.
May 22nd. John Nicholson. John is one of the very few professional huntsmen left in the UK. He runs the Dulverton Pack and Kennels and today was the annual point to point at Bratton Down on the top of Exmore. The wind was blowing a hoolie but we had an excellent time with old chums Fred and Alison.
May 21st. The May Fayre in North Curry. Every year all the Societies, Organisations and Charities in the village pitch a tent in Queens Square and The Fosse, the road is closed and merriment is had by all. Great fun and a good money making venture for all the good causes.
May 20th . Steve the welder. Having spent the best part of last week under my 31 year old Land Rover to get it through its MOT Steve had the opportunity to do an emergency repair on the back exhaust of the X3, which seemed to be annexing itself from the car. I went away very happy £25 lighter thinking I had really put one over on BMW - the weld lasted 20 mins!
May 19th. Bernie and Sprout...again. I was on West Sedgemoor doing my thing and as I came out onto a pathway these two had just passed. They were coming back from Langport and I just liked the photo...apologies for the repetition.
May 18th Perry Leete. Buy ,buy ,buy - sell , sell, sell. Perry is a dealer and one of two brothers at Peter Leete and Partners in Grayshott. We get on well with them, always find their advice good and the are very fair with us.
May 17th. Stephen Marshall of Haart Estate Agents in Grayshott village. Today and tomorrow I am catching the opposition in my photos. I used to be Stephens MD and there is therefore a bit of niggle as you would expect. In Partnership with Tesco, Haart and ourselves are chalk and cheese.
May 16th Barry Bulpit. Not really the job I would hanker after. On your knees playing with 500 wires trying to find the right one which maks a phone ring. In 10 years I suspect this will be a thing of the past with everything over the ether. But, in this day and age, its a job
May 15th Fergus. He is back. After a year in North America the wonderer has returned, about 2" taller and I'm glad to say without the hint of an American accent. Trips to Cornwall, London, Majorica and Eurorailing for a month are on the horizon.
May 14th Freds Birthday. Its the big 26th today. All the family was together and Jess came down and joined us - a great weekend.
May 13th. June Bridger. June and her recently departed husband Bunny have been on the Grayshott-Haslemere scene for years. Bunny asa property Agent with offices at Haslemere Station just before WW2. June now occupies her time helping others, here she is in the MacMillan Charity shop. she is 80+
May 12th. Kevin Keighan. Kevin is the very traditional family butcher. Stating as a young chap in Bells of Haslemere I have known Kevin for years. Meat and service of a high quality (with a price tag to match)
May 11th. Dana Norrgren. I have known Dana for years. She and her husband had Woods Restaurant in Grayshott and latterly she has been running an external catering company. She has just pulled a planning gain by getting a bungalow in her garden - outside the SPA
May 10th. Penelope Keith. Came to Grayshott to read to the school children in our newly refurbished Square. A lovely afternoon and very well attended. For those of you too young to remember To the Manor Born and The Good Life, here she is
May 9th Upper Maunsel Lock on the Bridgwater & Taunton Canal. Located between North Newton and West Ling. Once a hive of industry but now resigned to tourism. Wikipedia
May 8th. This is the West Sedgemoor pumping station which controls the water on West Sedgemoor itself. Built in 1944 and refurbished in the mid 1960's the hugely important places control the water levels in the Somerset Levels. West Sedgemoor is internationally know for its birdlife much of which being owned by the RSPB
May 7th. Derek, That is all he would tell me. He clearly was a traveller and towing a tricolour pony behind in real gypsy fashion. I am told many of the original travellers walk with their ponies rather than ride, often clocking up many miles in a day. The stove on this was still smoking and you could clearly see the bed inside. A rather different person to March 13th who was an enthusiast exercising his pony
May 6th The Red Phone Box. What are you doing photographing one of those you may ask?. In reply I would ask you to tell me the last time you have seem one operating in the countryside. This is a fully operating box just outside Staythe in Somerset and is now really quite rare
May 5th. Polling in North Curry. This was the big one for the Liberal Democrats, this was David Cameron’s concession to them for joining the Government last may. And what did the country think of AV. The Answer was 68% of us said a very big defeat for the YES campaigne. Also our area went from Liberal Democrat to Conservative for the first time in for years
May 4th. Pierre Wrighterino. International property photographer and click friend to the stars. Pete has a great nieche photography business whilst at the same time being Godfather to my youngest Fergus. http://www.peter-wright-photographer.co.uk/
May 3rd. Toby Roberts. Toby is the new owner of Tanchoux Ironmongers in Grayshott. Having purchased the business from Mr and Mrs Howard and their son Keith. He is hard at work refurbishing the shop and literally using a "new broom"
May 2nd Sandrine Bennett. Sandrine is our French next door neighbour, we have fields which adjoin theirs. Today we were dagging, ear tagging and spraying our sheep and lambs. As you can see its at bit of a scum.
May 1st. Knighthayes Court. Owned by the National Trust, this country house just outside Tiverton in Devon has the most splendid walled organic gardens. Built in the 1880's perched high on a hilltop there are some glorious views through established parkland.
April 30th. The Hidden Footpath. Driving between Staythe and Stoke St Greagory I came upon this this foot path sign on the side of the road. It appeared to come from nowhere and led into a path about 18" wide which seemed only to be used by badgers as the tree canopy was at best 4' high.
April 29th. The Royal Wedding. I worked very hard to get this shot. As you will imagine space was at a premium and there were heads all over the place. My lucky break came when Molly moved to the left, Sid stood still for a second and Susan fell asleep on the sofa - then I had a full clear shot of the TV screen!
April 28th. Aller Moor. Throughout the Levels are these mini stone and brick bridges. Usually only a couple of feet high and providing access from the droves to the meadows, they are quite lovely and have been there for years.
April 27th. The Cathedral of The Moors. Or otherwise known as the the church of St Peter and St Paul. Set high above the Levels with views to the Quantocks and beyond, this church is far bigger that the village would expect to have... I suspect a symbol of wealth from days goneby.
April 26th. Sunrise in North Curry. Up at 5.30 to head up to Hampshire and the sun was just poking through our walnut tree. What a lovely day. Left at 5.50am in my dest at 8.10. First there!
